Gifford High School was initially named Bulawayo Technical School when it was established in 1927, because it mainly catered for technical subjects. It was then changed to Gifford Technical School on 19 August 1961 in honour of Mr Philip Henry Gifford whose energy and personality were largely responsible for bringing the School into existence and shaping its successful evolution.

From its inception, in 1927 the Bulawayo Technical School fulfilled a dual role. ?A day school provided a general education with technical training, while an evening school offered technical training. ?A variety of commercial subjects were also offered to complete a focus on Vocational education. ?Day classes offered English, Mathematics, Science, Engineering, Engineering Drawing, Building construction and Woodwork. ?Evening classes included Bookkeeping, Commerce, Shorthand and Typewriting.

Gifford High School currently has an enrolment of 800 boys in forms 1 to 6. Students enrolled at the school study towards Zimbabwe Junior Certificate, Zim Sec ‘O’ Level and ‘A’ Level all qualifications offered by The Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council – a parastatal under the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture, responsible for the administration of public examinations in Zimbabwean schools.
